The Compact 35mm Rangefinder Lens That Slips Into Your Pocket
There's a reason the 35mm focal length has defined street photography for a century. It sees the world roughly as your eye does — wide enough to breathe, tight enough to pull the viewer in. The new 7Artisans M 35mm f/2.8 distils that classic perspective into one of the smallest, lightest all-metal lenses available for Leica M and L39 / LTM screw-mount cameras. At just 88 grams and 28mm in length, you'll forget it's on the camera — until you look at the results.
Inspired by golden-era rangefinder optics — the Leica Elmar and Summaron lineage — this lens pairs a classic Double Gauss optical design (7 elements in 5 groups, including 4 high-refractive-index elements) with modern manufacturing tolerances and multi-layer coatings. The outcome: contemporary centre sharpness with the smooth gradation, subtle vignetting, and natural rendering that digital correction profiles can never quite replicate.
Why Photographers Are Choosing the 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8
- Genuinely pocketable. 88g and 28mm long — lighter than most lens caps you've owned. It transforms any M or Barnack-era body into an everyday carry kit.
- Classic rendering, modern sharpness. The Double Gauss structure delivers strong centre resolution wide open, controlled barrel distortion under 1%, and no detectable focus shift on stopping down — rare virtues at any price.
- Dual-mount versatility. The Leica M bayonet ring is removable, converting the lens natively to L39 / M39 screw mount — no adapter required. One lens, two ecosystems.
- Full rangefinder coupling. Coupled from 0.7m to infinity on M-mount bodies (1m to infinity on most L39 bodies). The front nameplate ring does not rotate during focus — a usability improvement over classic Elmar-style designs.
- All-metal build. Precision-machined body with a blacked-out finish that looks the part on any camera from a Barnack IIIf to an M11.
- Two hoods included. A longer cylindrical hood for flare control, and a shorter protective bumper hood — both shipped in the box.
Optical Performance
The 7-element / 5-group Double Gauss structure with four high-refractive-index elements gives this lens a rendering profile that punches well above its price. Expect:
- High centre sharpness and good contrast from f/2.8
- Corners catching up by f/4–f/5.6 — ideal for street and documentary work
- Barrel distortion below 1% — critical for uncompensated film shooting
- Controlled flare courtesy of modern multi-layer coatings over the classic Double Gauss base
- Smooth, graduated bokeh from the 7-blade aperture
The 61.8° angle of view on full-frame gives you that familiar, comfortable 35mm perspective — expansive enough for environmental context, intimate enough for portraits and close candids.
Camera Compatibility
The 7Artisans M 35mm f/2.8 is compatible with a broad range of rangefinder bodies:
